On fear. Last weekend at the NUS Hackers Hack n Roll hackathon, we had a choice: follow the well trodden path of software or go down the path of hardware. As a team comprising of students who had worked on several software projects, we knew we would make something but our hardware idea was really interesting and not choosing that seemed wrong, despite the fact that we would likely fail. In the end our hearts knew what we wanted and so we chose the hardware idea. The fear of failing was strong but we knew that it was the action that mattered and not the fruits of that action. With this in mind, we began to work on LookOut: A second pair of eyes for the visually impaired. We realised that today's technology could enable visually impaired people to become more independent and what was lacking was a device specifically designed for their needs. So we developed a pendent-like device which users can simply activate by pressing a button. Users converse in natural language and ask a question about their surroundings which a camera on board the device captures. And finally, using AI the user receives an answer to their question via voice through earphones. Our vision is simple: just like the cane was invented a hundred years ago to support the visually impaired, devices like ours will enable them to be independent in the future. We are super stoked about this and are dedicated to building the future. The 24 hour process of building was not only hard, but it was downright crushing. We pivoted from several different ideas and multiple device types and landed upon a working prototype which the community at NUS hackers quite enjoyed. This has been a truly rewarding experience and I am so glad that we acknowledged what was holding us back from choosing this idea and instead looked it in the eye: fear. Attackers are human and make mistakes. Investigating our telemetry for #PlayfulTaurus activity, we found a misspelled C2 domain from this threat actor in 2022. A timeline illustrating this mistake is available at https://bit.ly/3TPlUrX#Unit42ThreatIntel #APTs
