LIGHTen UP (LIGHT EM UP)

1.

OLLIE (V.O.) Ever woke up one day wondering what the f*ck happened to you? Why everything good in

your life can easily turn to sh*t when you even think about it? Someone once told me to lighten up, take a deep breath and enjoy the moment. But how do you do that when you’re me? I’m Ollie

Brooks.

1. INT. OLLIE’S HOUSE - BEDROOM - DAY 1 An alarm clock goes off. Ollie turns it off and slowly gets up looking depressed. 2. INT. OLLIE’S HOUSE - LOUNGE - DAY 1 Ollie walks past his alcoholic father, who is lying drunk on the floor, on the way out of his house. His father is seen surrounded by empty beer cans and sick stains on his shirt. 3. EXT. COLLEGE - OUTSIDE THE ENTRANCE - DAY 1 Students who see Ollie walk past make sly comments and shout abuse at him. One student even spits chewed up paper at him using a straw and laughs.

STUDENT 1 Oi! Nut job! Taken your pills lately?

STUDENT 2

Freak.

STUDENT 3 Look! It’s that mental kid.

4. INT. COLLEGE - HALLWAY - DAY 1 The college bully notices Ollie and pins him up against the wall, threatening him for money.

COLLEGE BULLY Cough up Wrist Slit

When Ollie gives him the money, the student punches him in the stomach. Ollie falls to the ground and groans in pain. 5. INT. - COLLEGE - MEN’S TOILETS - DAY 1 Ollie coughs in pain and spits out some blood into the sink bowl. 6. INT. COLLEGE - CLASSROOM - DAY 1 Ollie is sat at his desk in class, stuck in deep suicidal thoughts and not paying any attention to the lesson. Images of falling, rope, explosions and death are shown from Ollie’s mind. 7. INT. OLLIES HOUSE - BEDROOM - DAY 1 Ollie takes his medication and then goes to sleep. The daily routine is then repeated quickly over a number of days. 8. EXT. STREET - DAY 1

Ollie is walking on his way home and passes a stranger.

LIGHTen UP (LIGHT EM UP)

2.

STRANGER Wow ha! You look like sh*t. You know what? Take this. You look like you need it more than I

do.

The stranger hands him over a small bad of weed. Ollie looks horrified and tries to walk around him but the stranger is still in the way.

STRANGER Take it! Trust me once you’ve had a puff of that sh*t, you’ll feel better than ever. I use it as a sort of

medication for troubled times man. Ha!

Ollie tries to quickly give back the bag and walk away but the stranger grabs him by the arm and pulls him close.

STRANGER

Don’t be f*cking ungrateful man! You know how much that would cost for a small sh*tty bag?

Ollie takes the weed and walks home quickly. 9. INT: OLLIE’S HOUSE - STAIR CASE - DAY 1 Ollie runs up the stairs and straight into the bathroom. 10. INT. OLLIE’S HOUSE - BATHROOM - DAY 1 Ollie slams the door behind him and leans over the sink looking ill, hearing the past voices of those who have neglected him. He rolls up his sleeves revealing cuts and bruises up his arm.

OLLIE (V.O.) Never in my life have I ever felt so desperate to escape my loneliness. I just wanted someone who

could understand me, talk to me, like me. But what I really needed in that moment was some peace of mind.

Ollie remembers what the stranger said to him earlier.

STRANGER (V.O.) Once you’ve had a puff of that sh*t, you’ll feel better than ever!

Ollie rushes to search through his pockets and find the little bag of weed. He stares at it and then picks up the bottle of anti-depressants. He then pours the bottle down the drain and starts to smoke the weed.

OLLIE (V.O.) Admittedly not the best decision I’ve ever made in my life but it’s kind of like a medication. Right?

Ollie lays down and continues to smoke. He stares up at the smoke filled room and takes a deep breath. The world around becomes bright and colourful.

OLLIE (V.O.) Days and weeks passed this way. Whenever I felt low I’d light up. No worries, no troubles, just me.

LIGHTen UP Ebook - [PDF Document] (3)

Jack Austin

Over a period of time Ollie laughs, cries, giggles and then feels distressed in pain until everything turns to darkness. 11. EXT. COLLEGE - OUTSIDE THE ENTRANCE - DAY 2 Two police officers are seen talking to a teacher. Ollie takes one last smoke before going to class.

LIGHTen UP (LIGHT EM UP) 3.

12: INT. COLLEGE - CLASSROOM - DAY 2 Ollie is sat at his desk getting ready for class to start. A new student walks in and sits where the college bully would have originally sat.

OLLIE Woah hey, sorry but you can’t sit there. Thats Tom’s desk and if he finds you sitting in his spot he’ll

go mental. Wait why are you in his space anyway, your not even in this class?

JOEL I guess you could say I’m the new guy then. I’m Joel Thead.

The teacher walks into the room.

TEACHER Ok class settle down, settle down. Now as you may have heard Tom Dale has been reported missing

so if you here anything about his where about, then please notify the police immediately.

OLLIE I’m Ollie Brooks by the way.

JOEL

Nice to meet ya man, so you getting high after this then?

OLLIE What? NO of course not!

JOEL

Chill out man, It’s cool. I do it all the time.

13: EXT. PARK - DAY 2 Ollie and Joel are sitting on the swings smoking weed.

JOEL You don’t entirely strike me as a happy guy Ollie. You don’t talk much. It’s okay man I can tell these

things, everyone’s got troubles. Wanna tell me what’s up?

OLLIE It’s not so much troubles it’s more like issues. I eeerr. I’m not exactly popular round here, and I kind

of used to feel depressed a lot of the time.

JOEL And that’s how you came across the magic greens eh? Just stick with me man, we’ll have a laugh.

Just Lighten up, take a deep breath and enjoy the moment. That’s what I do.

LIGHTen UP Ebook - [PDF Document] (4)

Jack Austin

Ollie and Joel inhale the smoke from the weed and breath out. The boys hang out together, go out on the streets and enjoy themselves. They wink at girls that pass by, ring every door bell on the street and run off, they even get drunk at the pubs and sea side. Joel and Ollie enter a club full of girls, alcohol and club lights flashing. They dance, drink and Smoke. Ollie looks up at Joel and starts to see in double vision. He laughs, giggles and then cries in Pain. His vision distorts and Joel vanishes from thin air. Ollie goes outside for some fresh air. 14: EXT. OUTSIDE THE CLUB - DAY 3

OLLIE

Joel? Joel you out here? ... Joel?

LIGHTen UP (LIGHT EM UP)

4. 15: INT. OLLIES HOUSE - FRONT ENTRANCE Ollie walks in drunk on the phone, calling Joel. The number is not recognised.

OLLIE Where the hell are... you...?

Ollie pauses, stops and drops the phone in shock from the sight of what he can see. Ollie’s father lies dead cold on the ground covered in blood. Above him stands Joel, also covered in blood, pouring alcohol all over his father’s corps. Ollie runs toward him.

OLLIE What the f*ck have you done Joel? You’ve killed him! Why?

JOEL

Isn’t that a question you should be asking yourself Ollie?

OLLIE What?

JOEL

Your old man was a piece of work wasn’t he?

Ollie feels painful flashbacks of his drunk father abusing him.

JOEL (V.O.) Drunk, violent and selfish. He even blamed you for the death of Mum.

JOEL

He can’t hurt you anymore now. And no one else will ever do the same to you again. We’ll make sure of that.

Ollie turns around to rush to the door to escape but immediately runs into Joel who seems to have teleported from one side of the room to the other. Ollie falls backwards and crawls back away from Joel.

OLLIE What the hell do you want from me?

JOEL

It’s not what I want from you, it’s what you need from me ... from us. An escape route.

LIGHTen UP Ebook - [PDF Document] (5)

Jack Austin

Joel walks slowly towards Ollie and flicks on his lighter, revealing the small flame whilst holding a bottle of whisky.

OLLIE Please. Don’t kill me, leave me alone!

JOEL

Kill you? That would be suicide! Quite literally. I can’t survive without you Ollie. You and I aren’t so different. We’re much closer than’d you think. You need to remember Ollie and accept it.

OLLIE

Remember what?

Joel grabs Ollie and pulls him close, buts a bottle in his hand

LIGHTen UP (LIGHT EM UP) 5.

JOEL

Remember Ollie and accept it? He forces Ollie to pour the whisky onto his father’s corps.

JOEL (V.0.) What happened that night when Tom Dale disappeared? When you first took that breath of freedom

and felt true sanity! A flashback is seen of the day Ollie first gave up the anti-depressants and first got high. Ollie is shown later being picked on by Tom Dale in an alley. Ollie fights him, picks up a metal pole off the floor and hits Tom repeatedly in the head with it. Ollie is then seen, locking Toms body in his cupboard. Another scene is shown of Ollie’s father discovering the body and then being stabbed in the head with a kitchen knife. The flash backs fade away. Ollie, feels something in his pocket, discovering a bloody knife there.

OLLIE How could I forget? How did I forget? How do you know more than I do? That’s not possible!

Joel kicks Ollie onto his knees next to the trail of alcohol leading up to the corps and puts the lighter into Ollie’s other hand, still grasping him tightly.

JOEL

The thing is, you can’t lock away a secret Ollie. You have to destroy it, burn it till there’s nothing left. And only we can do this. Only you can do this. Now light up.

Joel and Ollie flick on the flame. From a distance you can only see Ollie holding the lighter with no sight of Joel.

JOEL Take a deep breath.

Ollie is still being held tightly by Joel. From a distance Joel is still not visible. Ollie cries as he takes a deep breath.

JOEL And enjoy the moment.

Joel completely disappears from sight and Ollie drops the flame onto the trail of alcohol and burns the corps, leaving nothing but a pit of fire.
