Health Effects of Adolescent Pregnancy

Adolescence, especially the younger group in the early puberty, requires the development of various systems of the body to be ready to conceive. Teenage pregnancy therefore brings with it
more health problems than women who are pregnant at any other age. Some of the health effects during pregnancy, childbirth, and after pregnancy are

- Anemia in pregnant women
- High blood pressure during pregnancy
- Risk of death from preeclampsia
- Postpartum hemorrhage
- Depression after childbirth
- Endometritis
- Died from childbirth
- Complications from unsafe termination of pregnancy

Adolescent birth impacts both the mother and the baby health. The effects of a teenage mother's birth can cause preterm (before 37 weeks) or low birth weight babies (weighing less than 2500 g), both of which affect survival during the baby's first year of life.

Most of adolescent pregnancies are unwanted and often end in unsafe abortions. Especially in Thailand, most abortions are illegal abortions. There is evidence that countries, where abortion is
prohibited by law, have an incidence of complications from abortion which leads to a significantly higher rate of disability or death among pregnant women than in countries where abortion is legal. In Thailand, the majority of those who decided to have an abortion were students or college students, followed by a group of people under 20 years of age.

I am always enthused to develop my potential because it makes me more confident and self-esteem of myself.
The reason why I decided to be a young leader is because I think it is a chance to learn more about how to be a good leader and how to communicate on multimedia, and the most important to participate in this project, because I want to help others, especially those who are at-risk or victim of sexual exploitation.

Youth Voices for Change is an initiative of the Down To Zero Alliance that seeks to prevent the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents by amplifying the voices of young leaders for change in Latin America and Asia.
