There is still time - No more delays

  • A notice on sexual exploitation of children

Every year, almost one million boys and girls around the world are affected by sexual violence. A survey on child sexual abuse was conducted last in 2007. About 53.22% of children participated in the survey, of which 52.94% were boys and 48.06% were girls who reported experiencing the harassment themselves. Later on, another survey was conducted in which we found that between 2016 and 2017, the number of cases of child sexual harassment increased by 22%. Maharashtra (2632), Uttar Pradesh (2023) and Tamil Nadu (1456) are the three states with the highest number of child sexual abuse cases in India. From the above numbers, we understand how important it is to talk about this issue in India.

Child sexual abuse is always an issue that people usually prefer to keep in the dark. But the number of incidents around us has increased so much that we have to bring this issue into light now. We all know why we don’t want to shed light on this issue. We are well aware of the various angst, discriminatory behaviours and the fear of losing a relationship. According to the survey of child sexual abuse, most children reported that they experienced harassment from a loved one or from a trusted person. In reality, those with whom such incidents occur are not to be blamed. So, without blaming them, we need to think about how we can help them so that they can reach out to us and we can punish the real culprits.

We need to be more aware about this. Whenever we see any inconsistency in the behaviour of a child, we must immediately understand that something has happened to the child which could be unfortunate. And if we can't talk to that child in that situation, we can take the child to a child counsellor. Many times, children may not be able to tell what actually happened to them due to lack of proper words. So, parents or anyone who works directly with children on a regular basis, need to be very careful to understand the condition of children. If we can keep this kind of thing in mind then the children of your house will be a little safer and the number I wrote above will be reduced someday. Whenever we find out that there has been any sexual harassment with a child, we should immediately contact the Child Line help number 1098. This number is reserved for children issues only. We can contact this department with any problem of children. And this 1098 number is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. So at any moment, we can contact them about any children's issues.
