Storm Lake Times Pilot

A Storm Lake woman was arrested last Thursday for slapping another woman in the face and hurling a baby scale at her.

Stephanie Struthers, 55, was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail Sept. 15 on a charge of assault with intent to inflict serious injury, a misdemeanor. Struthers allegedly hurled a baby scale at another woman and slapped the other woman at a residence in the 6000 mile of 170th Avenue at around 5:42 p.m., according to an affidavit filed by the Buena Vista County Sheriff. The assault allegedly struck the female victim’s left side of her face, leaving a one-inch “red mark” and dizziness, the affidavit alleges.

The two women lived in the same residence in rural Storm Lake, according to the affidavit.

Struthers was released the following day, pending an initial appearance in magistrate court Oct. 6.

Probation for assault

A Storm Lake man was sentenced to two years probation earlier this month for allegedly choking the mother of his unborn child.

Associate Buena Vista County District Court Judge Andy Smith sentenced Sean Naughton, 29, to the probation term in an order last Monday. Naughton agreed to serve the sentence, according to court records. He pleaded guilty to a single count of domestic assault, strangulation. In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to recommend two years probation in lieu of two years in prison.

Naughton allegedly grabbed the mother of his unborn child by the throat, “causing the airway of the victim to be restricted on two separate occasions,” according to an affidavit filed by Storm Lake police.

Lakeside man arrested

A Lakeside man was arrested on Sunday for battering a male occupant of a house in the 1500 block of Sugarcreek Lane.

Nahlik Luther, 21, was booked on Sunday into Buena Vista County Jail on charges of public intoxication, disorderly conduct, trespass causing damages greater than $300 and assault causing bodily injury. Luther allegedly accosted an unidentified man at 1503 Sugarcreek Lane at 9:02 a.m. He assaulted him, causing “facial swelling, with both eyes shut and a laceration to his foot,” according to an affidavit filed by Storm Lake police. The assault reportedly occurred after Luther was told to leave the residence, the affidavit alleges.

Luther was released the following day without bond, according to court records. An initial appearance hasn’t been set yet.

SL man surrenders after assault on wife

A Storm Lake man was arrested for breaching entry into a Lake Avenue residence and assaulting his wife.

Javier Garcia-Aguilar, 38, was booked into Buena Vista County Jail at 5:04 a.m. Sunday on charges of domestic assault causing bodily injury and first-degree burglary, a felony. Garcia-Aguilar allegedly breached entry at 1009 Lake Ave. at around 3 a.m. and struck his wife in the face, leaving “a swollen bleeding wound under her right eye,” according to an affidavit filed by Storm Lake police.

Garcia-Aguilar allegedly fled the residence after the assault and surrendered himself around two hours after the assault, according to a statement issued on Monday by the SLPD.

He was booked into Buena Vista County Jail on a $25,000 bond, pending a preliminary hearing Sept. 27.

Domestic assault charge

A Storm Lake man was arrested on Saturday for battering his wife in a vehicle outside of a residence in the 700 block of Barton Street.

Alfredo Sanchez-Ramos, 39, was booked into Buena Vista County Jail on Saturday on charges of domestic assault causing bodily injury, fourth-degree criminal mischief and public intoxication. Sanchez-Ramos allegedly punched a female victim “several times in the face and chest area” in a vehicle parked outside 715 Barton St., according to an affidavit filed by Storm Lake police. He then exited the vehicle and broke the front vehicle, the affidavit alleges.

Sanchez-Ramos was released without bond the following day, pending an appearance in magistrate court Oct. 6.

Alta woman assaults boyfriend with broomstick

An Alta woman was arrested for assaulting her boyfriend with a green metal broomstick.

Georgiana Hauk, 22, was booked into Buena Vista County Jail on Sunday for domestic assault with intent to inflict serious injury, a misdemeanor.

Hauk allegedly struck her boyfriend with a green metal broomstick, leaving “several lacerations,” according to an affidavit filed by Storm Lake police. The lacerations were apparent to investigators — they were on the front of his body and there were lumps on his forehead, the affidavit continues.

Hauk was released, pending an initial appearance that will be set at a later date.

Probation for vehicle theft

A Lakeside man was sentenced to two years probation for stealing a vehicle from a farmer on Hwy. 71 in May.

Associate Buena Vista County District Court Judge Andy Smith sentenced Alberto Sosa, 32, to the probation term in an order last Tuesday. Sosa agreed to serve the sentence, according to court records. In exchange for his guilty plea to misdemeanor operating without owner’s consent, prosecutors agreed to recommend two years probation in lieu of two years in prison.

Sosa allegedly stole a motor vehicle from a residence in the 6100 mile of Hwy. 71 in May.

Albert City man pleads guilty to felony

An Albert City man pleaded guilty to a felony in connection with a search warrant that yielded handguns he was barred from possessing.

Warren Simpson, 45, pleaded guilty on Monday to a single count of felon in possession of a firearm through his attorney, Jim Schall of Storm Lake. No recommendations on a sentence were filed by Schall or the Buena Vista County Attorney’s Office. Sentencing will be set at a later date.

Deputies executed a search warrant at Simpson’s house at 310 Main St. in Albert City in February. The search yielded “a few handguns” in Simpson’s bedroom, according to an affidavit filed by the Buena Vista County Sheriff. Simpson had two previous felony convictions, one of which stemmed from a “felony escape from custody conviction in Sac County,” the affidavit alleges.

Probation for burglarizing farm properties

A Cherokee man was sentenced to five years probation for a series of burglaries to farm properties and residences in Cherokee and Aurelia since January 2021.

Cherokee County District Court Judge Nancy Whittenburg sentenced Todd Booher, 35, to the probation term in an order Aug. 31. Booher agreed to serve the sentence, according to court records. In March, Booher pleaded guilty to two counts of third-degree burglary. In exchange, prosecutors agreed to dismiss two other burglary counts that were filed against him and recommend probation in lieu of 10 years in prison.

Booher was arrested three times in 2021 and 2022 for burglarizing three properties in Cherokee and Aurelia, according to court records.

He allegedly breached entry to his former employer’s shop on East Coombs Drive in Aurelia in February 2022; he did so again less than three weeks later. The next month, he allegedly entered a barn on V Avenue in Aurelia to steal a hose so he could steal fuel out of a tank. In 2021, he allegedly entered a property on North First Street in Cherokee and took “waders, some artwork, a lunchbox, a broken tablet, contact solution, shopvac filter, some hats and a tie blanket,” according to an affidavit filed by Cherokee police.

SL man arrested for assaulting wife

A Storm Lake man was arrested for allegedly grabbing his wife of 12 years by the hair, causing the woman to barricade herself in their bedroom.

Alexander Ramos-Rodriguez, 46, is accused of scaring his wife by grabbing her by the hair on Sept. 10, according to an affidavit filed by the Storm Lake Police Department. His wife attempted to hide in the bedroom to keep Ramos-Rodriguez away from her.

Once police arrived and attempted to arrest Ramos-Rodriguez, he resisted “despite being told multiple times (to) stop resisting and put his hands behind his back,” according to the affidavit. Because of the resistance, it caused officers to take him to the ground and force him into handcuffs.

Ramos-Rodriguez is charged with domestic abuse assault, his first offense, and interference with official acts. Both are simple misdemeanors.

He’s scheduled to appear in magistrate court Oct. 18.

Arrest for harassment

A Storm Lake man was arrested for allegedly making “offensive racially motivated comments” toward a woman.

Deon Parkhurst, 30, allegedly called a woman derogatory names around noon on Sept. 12. Parkhurst allegedly made “offensive racially motivated comments,” according to an affidavit filed by the Storm Lake Police Department, causing the woman to feel harassed.

Parkhurst made admissions “implicating that he had harassed the victim,” according to the affidavit. He’s charged with second-degree harassment, a serious misdemeanor.

Parkhurst is scheduled to appear in magistrate court on Oct. 4.

Throat punch at Goodwill

A Storm Lake man was arrested for punching a person on Sept. 11 at Goodwill.

Jermaine Ford, 32, was allegedly seen in a Goodwill surveillance video punching a man in the throat, according to an affidavit filed by the Storm Lake Police Department. The victim had “red bruising on the front of his throat, indicating assault,” according to the affidavit.

Ford is charged with assault, a simple misdemeanor. He’s scheduled to appear in court Sept. 20.

Alta man arrested for domestic abuse

An Alta man was arrested for punching his ex-girlfriend in the face and giving her a black eye.

Salterino Lohn, 22, allegedly punched his ex-girlfriend around 5 p.m. Sept. 9 at the 200 block of East Third Street in Alta. Lohn punched the woman in her upper left eyebrow, causing her to have a bump on her head and a black left eye, according to an affidavit filed by the Storm Lake Police Department.

Lohn “denied punching (the woman) but admitted to slapping (her) across her face and pulling her hair,” according to the affidavit. Lohn and the woman lived together for about two to three months.

He’s charged with domestic abuse causing injury or mental illness, his first offense. It’s a simple misdemeanor. He’s scheduled to appear in court Oct. 5.
