SYRACUSE – In a special meeting of the Wawasee School Board Tuesday, Mike Wilson and Don Bokhart were sworn in for the 2017-2018 school year.
A motion to approve the board reorganization for the 2017-18 school year was passed, and board members approved were as follows: president, Rebecca Linnemeier; vice president, Rob Fisher; secretary, Mike Wilson; recording secretary, Amanda Jackson; board attorney, James Flecker; treasurer, Director of Finance Jim Evans; and deputy treasurer, Sandy Hollar.
The Board of Finance officers were named as president, Mary Lou Dixon, and secretary, Don Bokhart.
Superintendent Dr. Tom Edington, Evans, Don Ritter, Assistant Superintendent Joy Goshert and Flecker were approved as the only board representatives able to open sealed bids and receive quotes for school business.
The school board meeting times were re-established as the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m., with the exception being the month of April, which will be the third Tuesday at the same time and location. Meetings will continue to be held in the Wawasee Warrior room.
The board stipend was established at $2,000 plus $100 per regular meeting and $60 per special session paid quarterly, capped at $6,000 total. The board then voted in the 2017-2018 school calendar.
Finally, the board discussed the potential plan for a virtual option for inclement weather. Goshert explained that Wawasee is still in the planning stages for the application for the upcoming school year. A virtual option plan would be to make up for snow days through internet work days rather than having snow days built into the school calendar. Goshert noted that Wawasee needed to put together an application that demonstrates there is internet access to students and teachers away from the school buildings, and also demonstrate that students would have access to instructors during work days.
The two options that are being considered are to either schedule days in which students who don’t have access to the school on a snow day can come in and get access to lessons, or to schedule a virtual option on the actual day of inclement weather, with no need for students to physically come into the school. Goshert noted that the virtual option on the snow day is the preferred route.
The board considered the ramifications for teachers, students, parents, as well as support staff, discussing that teachers would need to still be available as if it was a work day as well as the fact that a virtual day may be more difficult for kindergartners and first-graders. More discussions on this matter will be held throughout the year.
The regular January Wawasee board meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 17 in the Wawasee Warrior room.
